What’s Happening in Inverness – May 2018
May is the month that really heralds the arrival of the tourist season in Inverness and the Scottish Highlands. Guests staying at our bed and breakfast in Inverness have plenty to keep them entertained and here is our pick of the events coming up over the next few weeks:
29 April 2018 – Loch Ness Etape
So, strictly speaking, this belongs in the April round-up, but this is such a great (and popular) event that we decided to give it a bit of extra publicity.
Competitors in this event get to cycle 66 miles (106 km) of traffic free roads to complete a 360° closed-road route around Loch Ness. The race starts and finishes in the Highland capital of Inverness and includes 900 m of ascent. There is even a timed King of the Mountain stage that involves a 4.8 mile (9 km) climb gaining 380 m in height with a gradient reaching 12% at times.
Whilst there are plenty of riders competing for the winning time, there are many more who are simply doing it for the joy of riding one the UK’s most spectacular routes.
You can find out more about this awesome event at https://www.etapelochness.com/ and maybe we will see you as a rider in 2019!
3 – 7 May 2018 – Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival
The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival was launched in 1999 and invites whisky novices, enthusiasts and connoisseurs to discover the passion behind the world’s finest single malt whiskies. Speyside is the largest whisky-producing region of Scotland and is renowned the world over.
The festival delivers a programme of around 500 events such as exclusive distillery tours, tutored tastings, talks, whisky auctions and fairs, outdoor adventures by foot, canoe or argocat, traditional ceilidhs, fine dining dinners, live music and crafts – and everything in between!

Every spring vintage and classic vehicle enthusiasts come from far and wide to Inverness City Centre for an annual Classic Vehicle Show. Chrome and bodywork are gleaming, leather interiors and walnut dashboards are pristine, and the owners are more than happy to tell you all they know about their pride and joy.
This year the show takes place from 11 am on Saturday 12 May in Inverness City Centre with the Parade Finale starting at 3 pm when there is a procession of vehicles down High Street led by the Norcon Pipe Band.
The show is supported by a variety of entertainment offers, including street theatre and musician
20 May 2018 – Gordon Castle Highland Games and Country Fair
Perhaps the first Highland Games of the season with a full programme of events including the traditional such as caber tossing and highland dancing to the more unusual like parkour athletes and Indian runner ducks. The Gordon Castle Highland Games and Country Fair is entering its eighth year and expects to welcome 10,000 national and international visitors.

After the winter break, Cawdor Castle re-opens on Saturday 28th April.

The Castle is still home to the Cawdor family and is filled with beautiful furniture, fine portraits, intriguing objects and amazing tapestries.
This is an extraordinary place and has one of the best gardens you could hope for. We strongly recommend that you make time to visit.
